Martingale collars are engineered to prevent "sticking" in a tightened position.

They’re gentler than a choke collar or prong collar.
The martingale collar allows you to give slight corrections if you’d like, but it is much gentler than a choke (or slip) collar or a prong/pinch collar. This makes it a nice option for a variety of dogs, even puppies or senior dogs.

Precautions:

The d-ring that connects to the lead can catch on something, causing the collar to tighten on the dog's neck when no one is available to release the tension.

For this reason, you should remove the collar if you put your dog in a crate. You can keep the collar on when your dog wanders around the house, but you should weigh the risk of choking against the possibility that your dog could accidentally escape from your home without its collar.
